Research & Development


In addition to rapid scaling up, a coordinated effort on research and innovation is required to optimally facilitate and where possible accelerate scaling up and application. To this end, the program focuses on seven program lines with a broad spectrum from industrial, applied to fundamental research (TRL 2-8). The R&D program will make a major contribution to solving technical uncertainties, accelerating the intended cost reduction and developing innovative revenue models in both the supplying manufacturing industry and the production and application of climate-neutral hydrogen.

WP2: Transport and storage of hydrogen


Background

At the moment transport and storage of hydrogen are limited, as almost all H2 is directly used as energy carrier and feedstock in the industry where it is also produced. On the other hand, upscaling of hydrogen production to be deployed in the energy system will require research in the safety of the existing capillary grid for transmission and distribution of natural gas in NL and whether its use for transport of hydrogen is acceptable. Another question that arises is whether the future demand will require adjustments or expansions in the gas grid, e.g. due to installation of large-scale electrolysis capacity. The key requirement is safety, not only of the transport system but also of the different H2 storage and applications. Therefore research into large-scale storage of H2 is essential, for instance in tanks, cylinders or salt caverns, depleted gas fields and other storage facilities.

Goal

This work package focusses on managing:

  • Grid requirements for hydrogen transportation, gas quality and pressure issues.
  • Safety issues related to the entire hydrogen value chain and its organization.
  • Scaling up the introduction of hydrogen from local to national energy systems.
  • Design issues related to an international hydrogen network including the role of North Sea energy.
  • Offshore hydrogen production, conversion, transportation and storage.
  • Multidisciplinary aspects of large-scale hydrogen storage in salt caverns and depleted gas fields, onshore and offshore.

Activities - a few examples are:

  • Knowledge development in the field of transport and storage infrastructure.
  • Development of safety standards including setting up a national H2 transport and storage safety centre.
  • Development of a roadmap for transition in NW Europe.
  • Analysis and optimization of offshore hydrogen production, conversion, transport and storage.
